  • Poor Sam Price is rolling around in his grave as his family schemes to get a slice of the pie in the comedic, dessert theatre production "Where There's A Will There's A Relative," which opens at the Smyrna Opera House on Friday. The final show is Sunday.
The show's menu will include an assortment of tasty sweets including cookies, brownies, cake and cupcakes. Beverages such as iced tea and coffee will also be available, as well as a cash bar on Friday and Saturday.
Price, a wealthy entrepreneur, has passed away and his relatives gather at his residence to mourn. Eventually, all the praise for him morphs into greed as his family discusses their supposed inheritance, most of which has been donated to the church!
"Where There's A Will There's A Relative" is based on Rob Karshner's book of the same name. The production is directed by Pat Musto, of Smyrna.
"Whenever there's a death, it brings out the worst in people a lot of time," Musto explained. "I've seen that firsthand. Ask the undertakers, they've seen it firsthand, too."
The production, comprised of a half-dozen performers, doesn't feature any lead actors/actresses, since most of the cast has an equal role, said Musto, owner of the Talk of the Town Hair Stylists located on North Market Street. Cast members representing Smyrna are Sean Ervin (cast as Jerry, Price's brother) and Maureen Levine (as Mildred Longnecker, the notary public).
With the show two days away, Musto is pleased her cast can convincingly bicker with one another like a real family.
"In a couple scenes they sound like a family," smiled Musto. "They're talking over each other and pushing each other away because they're talking about the will, and this and that. I said, 'Gosh, you guys seem like you're really related.'"
