  • OBITUARY: Lawrence H. “Capt. Larry” DuHadaway Sr., 85

  • Lawrence H. “Capt. Larry” DuHadaway Sr., of Clayton, passed peacefully at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover, on Thursday, March 21, 2013. He was 85. Larry was a lifetime member of the Clayton, Christiana, and Smyrna Fire Companies, and had been a past member of the Indian River, Holloway Terrace, and Aetna Fire Companies.

  • Lawrence H. "Capt. Larry" DuHadaway Sr., of Clayton, passed peacefully at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover, on Thursday, March 21, 2013. He was 85.
    He was a firefighter for 64 years, and had been a member of the Delaware State Fire Police for many years, retiring in 2011.
    He served as a Navy Seabee from 1944-48, and later served with the Wilmington Fire Dept. from 1952-57.
    He owned and operated DuHadaway Welding for several years, and was proud to serve as the Captain of the Edwin M. Link Research Vessel from 1976-80.
    Larry was a lifetime member of the Clayton, Christiana, and Smyrna Fire Companies, and had been a past member of the Indian River, Holloway Terrace, and Aetna Fire Companies. He also was a 32nd degree Mason with Hiram Lodge 25, Newark.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Aileen; his second wife Mary Ellen; a son Jon Timothy; and a daughter Sandy.
    He leaves behind a son Larry Jr.; two daughters, Nancy McConnell, and Holly Sharp; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and his special friend and companion of 10 years, Jan Coulbourne and her sons Tate and Tyler.
    He is also survived by his very large fire company family. He was proud that 22 of his family members carried on the tradition of working in fire service.
    A viewing will be held from 5-9 p.m., on Tuesday, March 26 at the Clayton Fire House, 14 Railroad Ave., Clayton.
    Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Clayton Fire House, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington.
    In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to the Clayton Fire Co. Building Fund, PO Box 1050, Clayton, DE 19938.
