Twenty members of the Smyrna-Clayton community gathered in November and decided to re-charter the Smyrna FFA Alumni Chapter. As a result, the group members are excited to announce that an officer team has been elected and they are now looking for more community members to join the chapter.
The officers are as follows: president Matt Webber, vice president Deanna Dunning, secretary Jennifer Pierson, treasurer Mike Wheatley, reporter Brittany Marine, and advisor Russ Stinson.
The National FFA Alumni organization believes that, "FFA Alumni play a very important part in keeping agricultural education and FFA programs in our local schools. FFA relies on its alumni to garner support for FFA from their local communities, raise funds for chapter activities and scholarships, assist at FFA leadership camps and conferences, and much more."
Chapter members believe that the previous statement rings true to our growing community. As a result, the chapter wants to help maintain the high quality agricultural education that has been ingrained in the Smyrna-Clayton community since 1976.
Who can join?
"Remember, you don't have to be a former FFA member to become a member of the Smyrna FFA Alumni. This is an excellent way to support the nation's largest youth organization," said Russell Stinson, former Smyrna FFA Chapter Advisor and current Alumni advisor. "Maybe you had a family member who went through the program or is currently enrolled in the program and you want to show your support for them by becoming an Alumni member."
The Alumni Chapter maintained a booth during "I Love Smyrna School District Day" on Feb. 22, where many former members stopped by. Chapter members also talked with people that were not FFA members in high school but were interested in the alumni chapter. At the booth, the group had membership sign-ups and T-shirts for sale.
Goals of the group
"The goal of the alumni chapter is to conduct activities that will support the members of the Smyrna FFA Chapter, whether it is through fundraising, Career Development Event and leadership training, or hosting events that promote both active and alumni FFA activities," said Webber. "We have an enthusiastic group of officers that are looking forward to giving back to the organization in any way possible, so we are working hard to plan our first major event of the year. Hopefully in the future, as we get the ball rolling, we can send a representative to the National FFA Alumni Convention, which is held during the National FFA Convention."
The Smyrna FFA Alumni Chapter members hope to conduct some activities in the coming months.
For more information or to request a membership application, please email email@example.com or call the Smyrna High School Agriscience Department at 653-8581, ext. 3171.
Annual membership dues have been set at $20 per year, which includes membership in the National FFA Alumni. T-shirts are $10.
The chapter also has a Facebook page with alumni updates.
