  • The Lady Eagles from Smyrna took home first place at Saturday’s Keith Burgess Invitational held at Lake Forest High School.

Led by Raven Luckett, Erin Cooper, Tori Vickers, and Ashley Morris the girls team impressed taking home 6 first place finishes on Saturday.

Girls Head Coach Maura Schafer was extremely pleased with her team’s performance Saturday and believes it’s only the beginning for this talented squad.

“I am very pleased with our team performance,” said Schafer. “It took a collective team effort to come out on top with the first place trophy, and that is exactly what we did. We were able to score points in every event except two. We had some personal records, we had numerous first place (finishes), and we got to see some conference competition. We are certainly not satisfied though, we know we have to continue the hard work if we want to achieve our goals this season.”

Having seen some of their top in-conference competition on Saturday, Coach Schafer believes the team has gotten a clearer picture of where they stand amongst the elite.

“We hope to remain competitive and hopefully come out near the top of both the conference and state championships,” said Schafer. “CR is always tough, both in the conference and in the state. Delcastle and Charter are also challenges at the state level. We are going to continue working harder to stay on top.”

On the boys side, they finished 7th overall on Saturday. Aaron Scott, Ludric Francis, Gabe Mojica, David Hall and Kyle Smith were some of the standouts for the Eagles.

While the boys didn’t fare as well as the girls squad, Boys Head Coach Michael Macheska was happy with the team’s effort, just disappointed by the overall results.

“I am very happy with the individual effort of several of our athletes, “said Macheska. “However, I was hoping the team would place better than we did.”

The majority of the Smyrna boys squad is made up of some very young talent, and being able to compete in an invitational like Saturday’s Keith Burgess Invitational allowed them to see some of their conference competition first-hand.  Macheska believes the experience Saturday can only help improve the team overall, and leans on himself and his coaching staff to help move that maturation along.

“We are a very young team with only 6 seniors on the squad but we have loads of talent,” said Macheska. “As a coaching staff we need to put our athletes in the best position to score points. If our athletes are on their game and put in the right position, I think we can make our presence known in the conference and state.”
