  • Don’t panic if you see heavy smoke coming from Blackbird State Forest on Saturday.
The Delaware Forest Service will be holding a live burn as part of its annual Fire Camp training session for volunteer wildland firefighters from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The intensive, one-day training session provides prospective members of Delaware’s crew with key instruction in wildfire suppression techniques, fire behavior, fire weather, mobilization, pump and power saw usage and experience with live fire situations. Participants also complete a work capacity test that involves hauling a 45-pound pack over a 3-mile course in 45 minutes.
The training course is a required component for the crew to achieve annual certification from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
The exact time and location of the controlled burn within the state forest, which extends from Townsend to Smyrna, west of Del. Route 13, will be determined by weather conditions on Saturday.
