  • The 2013 Town of Smyrna Arbor Day Ceremony will be this Friday and will honor one local man for what he's done for the town of Smyrna over the years.
Arbor Day originated in Nebraska and is now celebrated all over the word. Smyrna Town Council chose to honor both Earth Day and Arbor Day this year on Friday, May 3.
    EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
    1. Honoring with a tree. For the past several years, the Town of Smyrna has honored a resident on Arbor Day with the planting of a tree. This year's recipient is Donald F. Neizer.
The program, which is planned by Smyrna's Shade Tree Commission, will be at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Levin Center parking lot.
    2. Giving his time. Neizer was born in Salem, Mass., but made Smyrna is home along with his family in 1976. Over the years he volunteered his time in a mentoring program at Smyrna High, and served on Smyrna's Planning & Zoning Commission/Board of Adjustment. The town chose to honor Neizer at the Arbor Day celebration because of his commitment to the betterment of the town.
Smyrna's Manager of Planning & Zoning Janet Vinc said the honor recognizes someone for their good deeds towards the town.
"One of the absolute greatest pleasures I've had while working here has been my experience working with him," Vinc said.
    3. Enhancing the town. Along with the Arbor Day celebration, the Shade Tree Commission will put together herb planters earlier in the week to donate to local businesses in downtown like Odd Fellows Café.
    WHY YOU SHOULD GO
"To honor Mr. Neizer. To recognize all he has contributed to the town," Vinc said.
