The Smyrna High School boys lacrosse team may only be in their second year as a varsity team, but the Eagles are making an impression and people are noticing.
Not only did Smyrna finish the season with their first 10-win season and DIAA state tournament berth, but head coach Mike Judy was named the Henlopen Conference 2013 Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year.
When his name was called as the recipient of the coach of the year award, Judy said he was surprised.
"To be considered for this award by arguably the best coaches in the state is truly an honor," Judy said. "I marvel at the accomplishment of these men, and am truly humbled that they would consider our body of work worthy of such an award."
Judy believes the early success of the Eagles' program is the reason he and the team were given the award. New teams in the conference are typically considered "bottom dwellers" for the first few years, Judy said, with excuses made regarding their lack of success with the assumption the team will struggle; the Eagles proved to be an exception.
When looking at the success of the season, Judy said it proves the Smyrna/Clayton community has embraced the culture of lacrosse with open-arms.
"Smyrna could establish itself as a serious consistent threat to Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney with the caliber of athletes present in this district, the growing interest among the community, and the future establishment of youth leagues and middle school programs," Judy said. "We are well on our way and must work harder than ever to maintain our winning habits and translate them into traditions."
As for his award Judy said he's proud on a personal level, but is extremely excited for the team because any "Coach of the Year" award is truly rooted in team recognition.
"My guys played their hearts out for me, their community, and most of all each other," Judy said. "My assistant coaches [Jason Keller and Mike Zulkowski] worked relentlessly to bring is to this level. These two factors are what ultimately made us successful."
