An exciting outdoor track season came to a most satisfying conclusion Saturday afternoon for the Smyrna High School girls team, as the Eagles captured the DIAA Division I State Championship at Caesar Rodney High School.
The Lady Eagles edged surprise second place finisher Delcastle by a 114-108 score. Charter finished third with 95 points and Caesar Rodney was fourth with 87 points out of 14 schools in Division I.
The Eagles and Riders battled all season for supremacy on the track. The Riders recently defeated Smyrna in a close dual meet, but the Eagles won the conference meet and now, the most important meet of the year.
Smyrna junior Raven Luckett had a tremendous weekend, winning four events.
On Friday, she soared to first place in the long jump with a distance of 18'7.25", which tied a Division I and meet record set by Shaina Hairston of Dickinson in 1998.
On Saturday, she raced to a first-place finish over Caesar Rodney's Tyra Reid in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 25.00 was three-hundredths of a second faster than Reid's.
In the 400-meter dash, Luckett finished in 56.37.
Teammate Shi Hilliard was third in the 400 in 59.28.
Good fortune continued for Luckett in the field events, as she won the high jump with a leap of 5', getting past Charter School's Anna Nowak and Cape Henlopen's Megan Hart, who both jumped 4'10".
Luckett said she was confident going into the weekend.
"I thought we would do well since we've been getting stronger as a team recently. And I was happy with my times on Friday and fortunate to do well in the field events," said Luckett.
Tori Vickers had a fine state meet, finishing third in the 3,200-meter run in 11:39.89 and fourth in the 1,600-meter run at 5:27.93.
"I have enjoyed the weekend, and I was pretty pleased with my times, and I was glad to help my team be successful," she said.
Smyrna's relay teams turned in great times. In the 4 x 200-meter race, the team of Jada Rider, Kiandra Taylor, Jam Buchannan and Hilliard came in fourth in the time of 1:48.42.
In the 4 x 400-meter relay, the team of Buchannan, Rider, Erin Cooper and Hilliard ran a 4:09.19, which was good for third place.
Hilliard, a senior, also said she was confident in participating in her last state track meet.
The 4 x 800 relay team of Alyson Davis, Vickers, Rukiayah Warner and Cooper finished third in 9:55.
Cooper also finished fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:25.87 and sixth in the 1600-meter run in 5:32.65.
In the pole vault, Shantell Kargbeh was the runner up with a height of 9', and Gabby Jones was fourth at 8'6".
