The Smyrna Middle School baseball team went undefeated this year, going 10-0 and dominating their opponents.
The Smyrna Middle School baseball team has just completed an amazing, undefeated 10-0 season, improving over the 2012 team that had a fine 9-1 record. Eagles Manager Harvey Carrow said the team dominated their opponents throughout the season, as only two games went the full seven innings. "We definitely had a lot of depth this year.We had a lot of pitching and we had a number of kids who could play several positions, and play them well," said Carrow. "Our pitchers struck out 59 while walking only 22 in 55 innings pitched. We really played as a team, and I believe that was one of the keys to our success," he said.
The team's offense was in high gear all season long, outscoring their opponents 135-25. Carrow said the boys compiled a hefty team batting average of .431 during the schedule.
"Our top hitter was Nolan Henderson, who led the Eagles with an unprecedented .667 average, and an .821 on base percentage. We had seven others hit over .500 on the roster, which consisted of five 8th graders and ten 7th graders, and we were fortunate to have 7th and 8th hitters with averages around the 500 mark, " he said.
Defensively, the team was disciplined and solid in the infield and the outfield, committing only 13 errors in the ten games. Three of the errors came in the final game on a rugged infield.
Carrow said the toughest game this year was against Milford, a sub .500 team. "They certainly didn't play like team with a losing record, they battled down to the last out," he said.
Team members also gave back to the community by supporting the Relay for Life effort with a $1000 check. The money was raised by pledges for runs scored throughout the season.
