Delaware State Police have arrested a 30-year-old Smyrna man for allegedly sexually abusing a child for more than a year at his home in the 1400 block of Paddock Road.

Police said the investigation began on June 11 when a relative of both Michael A. Connor and the six-year-old female victim contacted Delaware State Police. This relative reported that Connor and the victim were in a room together in Connor's home, and when the relative tried to enter Connor pushed the door shut, police said.

Shortly thereafter the relative asked the victim about what had occurred in the room, and the victim disclosed that Connor had tried to perform a lewd act on her, police said. After being contacted by the relative, detectives facilitated an interview with the victim that resulted in the victim revealing that Connor had been sexually abusing her since July 2011.

Police said Connor was arrested by detectives June 17 and transported to Troop 2, where he was charged with first-degree attempted rape and continuous sexual abuse of a child. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute on $160,000 cash bail.
