The Town of Smyrna has announced via their Twitter account and town website that Lake Como has been reopened.
The Town of Smyrna has temporarily closed Lake Como due to high levels of bacteria.
Assistant to the Town Manager Dawn Thompson said Tuesday afternoon in an email that since Lake Como is such a popular swimming and recreation site, the State of Delaware regularly tests the waters for excessive levels of pollutants and bacteria.
"Their latest water sample determine bacteria levels were too high," Thompson said. "This is likely due to the excessive levels of rain and heat/humidity we've experienced lately."
Thompson said the state ordered the town to close the lake until the amount of bacteria returns to an acceptable level. The town anticipates Lake Como will reopen by week's end.
