Smyrna's ninth annual National Night Out that was scheduled for tonight, Aug. 6 has been postponed until Tuesday, Aug. 20 due to inclement weather. The will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 20.
The celebration will be held on South Main Street between Commerce and South streets, hosted by the Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association and the Smyrna Police Department under sponsorship from WSFS.
This event has grown into Smyrna's largest block party featuring games, prizes, food, demonstrations, and displays of emergency service vehicles.
Celebrated in communities across the United States and Canada, National Night Out focuses on prevention of crime and drug activity. Goals include heightening community awareness of crime and drug prevention; generating support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Groups, businesses can join event
Community organizations and businesses still have the opportunity to join the free fun on Tuesday evening. There is no charge for a space, but those who are interested in participating need to call the Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association no later than Friday, Aug. 2, at (302) 598-5826 to register for a free space.
