Delaware State Police have arrested a Cheswold man after he collided with a State Police patrol car west of Dover.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 as a 27-year-old trooper was traveling westbound on Del. Route 8 approaching Rose Valley School Road, said DSP spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier. Fournier said the driver, identified as Alex E. Weal, 28, was operating a 2007 Mazda 3 northbound on Rose Valley School Road when he failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered into the intersection where he struck the rear driver's side of the fully marked 2010 Crown Victoria patrol car. The Mazda then continued northbound across Del. Route 8 and came to a stop in a ditch along Cahoon Branch Road. The patrol cruiser was forced into a counter-clockwise spin and came to a stop on Del. Route 8.
The trooper, who was properly restrained, was transported by EMS to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Weal, who was not injured, was taken to Troop 3 where a DUI investigation ensued. He was subsequently charged with second-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to have insurance in possession, and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court No. 2 and released on $4,000 unsecured bond.
The investigation is on-going and Route 8 at Rose Valley School Road was closed for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
