The newly formed Young Actors Guild will host auditions tonight and Tuesday night at Providence Creek Academy in Clayton for its first production, "Treasure Island." The show will be performed at the Smyrna Opera House in November.
The cast will feature the talents of more than 20 children and Director Barbara Bigelow said that there is room in the group for everyone, from the ostentatious to the shy.
"We have several speaking and nonspeaking roles for children who know they want to experience the spotlight," said Bigelow. "But, for kids that don't want to be onstage, they can participate in all kinds of backstage activities, from costuming and scenery to lighting and even directing."
Of the 20 roles available, Bigelow said that there are seven speaking parts for females and 12 speaking roles for males. However, she also added that YAG will also need lots of extras, who will be villagers and pirates.
Interested candidates should be prepared to do a cold reading of the script and also need to plan to stay for the entire audition, as several readings may be required. The tryouts will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19 and Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Providence Creek Academy. Registration will begin both nights at 6:30 p.m.
Bigelow stressed that parents need to be aware that they have to physically bring their child into the building and will need to pick them up from the audition room.
"We cannot have children dropped at the door and we cannot allow them to leave the building unattended," Bigelow said. "They are encouraged to stay and watch, though. We just ask that non-auditioning siblings not attend. Our space is limited and we want to minimize distractions."
Once cast, participants will need to be able to commit to the performance dates, which will be Saturday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17 at the Smyrna Opera House. Actors will also have to be at rehearsals, which will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3 through Thursday, Nov. 14.
The cost to participate will be $35 per person and includes a copy of the script and the costume. Bigelow said that she hopes to have the show cast by Friday and will be posting that information of the group's website as well as calling people to let them know.
