  • Members of the Smyrna Craft Beer, Wine & Food Festival committee presented several groups with donations Aug. 19 at the Smyrna Town Council meeting.
Festival committee member Joe Sheridan provided council with a general update of the July 13 festival. Sheridan said there was a little hiccup because of some rain but everything went well. Sheridan also thanked the town for allowing the group to put on the festival.
"We've decided to give a helping hand to the local charities that need it," Sheridan said.
The July 13 festival was the second time the group put on the event, which was initially suggested to highlight local food. Profits from the festival benefit local groups.
Sheridan's wife, Shirley, presented the donations.
The Smyrna/Clayton July 4th Association, Smyrna Public Library Guild, and Citizens' Hose Company each received a $500 donation. American Legion Ambulance 64 received two $500 donations for helping out at both last year's and this year's festival. The Greater Smyrna Clayton Boys & Girls Club and local Food Pantry both received a $2,500 donation.
"Again thank you everybody for your support and all the local help to get this event done again this year," said Shirley, who also told council the group would like permission to start planning next year's festival.
Councilwoman Valerie White made a motion, which council passed, to allow the committee to begin preparations for next year's event.
Sheridan said the group has already picked up four new sponsors who have ideas to improve upon the festival which will be on July 12 in 2014.
