Smyrna Rep. Bill Carson rolled up his sleeves to help save lives on Tuesday, donating a pint of blood to the Blood Bank of Delmarva.
A retired Citizens' Hose Company fire chief and the son of a Delaware State Police trooper, Rep. Carson said he knows about the constant need for blood – Blood Bank of Delmarva estimates that it needs 350 donors each day to meet the needs of hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula – which makes donating an easy decision.
Blood Bank of Delmarva is the sole supplier of blood and blood products to all 16 hospitals on Delmarva. The Blood Bank collects more than 83,000 units of blood each year to help save the lives of 20,000 patients each year. Red blood cells can be stored for 42 days, so the supply needs to be constantly stocked.
