Smyrna High School's field hockey team defeated Indian River Thursday on a dramatic tie-breaking goal with less than a minute remaining in the second half.
In the game at Smyrna High, the Eagles scored first at the 22:15 mark of the opening half on a goal by Alivia Scuse with an assist by Stacey Staley.
Smyrna held the lead until Indian River scored with just seven seconds left in the half.
Both teams battled throughout the second half, but neither could score.
Then with just over one minute left in the half, Smyrna got to set up a play after the ball went out of bounds near the Indian River goal. As the pass was sent in, Smyrna players kept their spacing and moved the ball towards the goal. Staley passed to Amanda Hennen who scored with 59 seconds left on the clock.
After a brief celebration, play resumed, and Smyrna kept up the defensive pressure as time ran out. Then the Eagles had the chance for a big celebration and group hug with Coach Fran Strosser after their first win of the season. Smyrna is now 1-4.

Smyrna is scheduled to play at Milford on Monday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m., and then at home Thursday, Sept. 26 against Delmar at 4 p.m.
