  • Smyrna Town Council honored Citizens' Hose Company fireman Gerald Mood at the Sept. 16 council meeting with a proclamation honoring Mood for his induction into the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association Hall of Fame.
Mayor Joanne Masten read aloud the proclamation during her presiding officer's report at the meeting.
"This is really a great joy for me having known Gerald and [his wife] Linda for so many years and knowing the dedication and loyalty that Gerald has had to the Citizens' Hose Company over the years," Masten said. "Just recently the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association inducted Gerald into the Hall of Fame. There's not a whole lot of people that achieve that and we're fortunate a citizen in the Town of Smyrna has achieved that."
Mood joined the Smyrna fire department in 1956 and has been active every year, except for his time in the United States Navy. He's held positions on the fire line and as an administrative officer. He was given a special life membership in 2000 and was named chief emeritus in 2006; Masten said Mood is one of only two people to win both awards. He was the department's Fireman of the Year for accumulating the most points for the year in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012.
DVFA honored Mood in 2006 for 50 years of service. He was named the state's Fireman of the Year last year. In his over 50 years of service with Citizens' Hose Company, Mood has responded to 9,500 alarms.
"We wish to take this opportunity to honor Gerald for being honored by the DVFA and to thank him for his untiring dedication and vital service to the Town of Smyrna and surrounding communities," Masten said. "It's a great privilege that I present this to you."
