The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 14 in Smyrna is having a Veterans Food & Motorcycle Run Saturday, Oct. 12 to benefit veterans in Delaware.
The fundraiser serves a dual purpose; it will give donated items to the Home of the Brave in Milford and raise money for 55 adopted veterans in local nursing homes. Here are the details of the fundraiser.
1. Giving back. For years the Ladies Auxiliary has adopted local veterans but this year the group decided to do more; therefore, the Ladies Auxiliary is doing a Veteran's Food & Motorcycle Run to donate needed items to the Home of the Brave.
"We're doing this because veterans are trying to get housing of their own. It's for homeless veterans and we're providing them with food and items while they're waiting on a home of their own," said Sherry Steller, of the Ladies Auxiliary.
2. Bring on the food and money. Registration for the bike ride is either $10 or an item on the wish list for veterans, Steller said.
Money raised will be used to buy items needed for the 55 veterans at local nursing homes the group adopted. Food donated will be taken to the Home of the Brave.
The items on the wish list are: pancake mix, syrup, cake mix, frosting for monthly birthday recognitions, cereals, instant oatmeal, instant grits, sugar, creamer, instant coffee, canned sodas, Gatorade, McCormick seasoning packs, canned soup, vegetables, canned chili, canned tuna, canned chicken, side items like Lipton rice and mashed potatoes, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, liquid dish soap, and Suave 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
Cars are invited to participate. You don't need to participate to donate.
There is a drop box at First National Bank of Wyoming in Smyrna; or participants can meet with Sherry Steller.
To contact Steller, call her at (302) 399-0635.
3. Stay for a party. Once participants are back from Home of the Brave, they can go to the banquet hall at the American Legion for live entertainment, a silent auction, and a 50-50 raffle. Silent auction items include dinner packages, gift certificates for hair salons and manicures, American flags and more. Similar items are needed for the silent auction. The live entertainment is Pooch & the Hound Dogs.
Why should you participate?
"To help local veterans who aren't so fortunate," Steller said.
