This Saturday, the Brandywine Harps Orchestra will be in town for what has become an annual pilgrimage for the all-girl group: "Halloween Spooktacular" at the Smyrna Opera House.
"We are thrilled to perform our Halloween show at the Smyrna Opera House," said harpist and director Janet Whitman. "We promise an evening of unique entertainment for the entire family."
Whitman and her group weaves together spooky stories, music and usually a few surprises for the audience. The harpists are known, not only for their individual and collective musical accomplishments but for putting together fun holiday shows.
"This concert is always one of the most eagerly anticipated performances of the season," said SOH Executive Director David Keller. "We are looking forward to the possibility of introducing new audience members to the wonderful sounds of the orchestra."
Whitman organized the group in 2000 and features the talents of a dozen accomplished harpists from Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Typically, their shows include more than just music. Depending on the program, there might also be choreographed dancing, solo or choral singing, poetry, percussion, storytelling, original compositions or special musical guests. The performance schedule has taken them all over world but they stay true to their roots by regularly performing throughout the area at venues like Longwood Gardens, the Everett Theatre, Mt. Gretna Tabernacle and countless churches and community events.
The have also produced two well-known and well-selling albums: "Christmas Crossings" and "Celtic Journeys." In 2009, the group was the first American Celtic harp orchestra to perform at the Edinburgh International Harp Festival in the event's 29-year history. The following year, in August, they were featured with the Kennett [Square] Symphony at Longwood Gardens for a sell-out crowd.
Tickets for the show are $18 per person. All seats are general admission. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m., with an on-site cash bar. The performance will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. Discounts are available for children 12 years old and younger and for students with current college identification.
