A water main break on Main Street in Smyrna caused road closures Thursday evening and Friday during the day.
Smyrna Assistant to the Town Manager Dawn Thompson said the incident occurred Thursday at 3 p.m. on South Main Street, and resulted in a partial road closure.
"It started as a leak in the portion of an eight-inch water main that is more than 60 years old," Thompson said.
Thompson said town crews were working on the pipe when the pressure caused the pipe to burst. She said crews worked Friday to address the problem by replacing an eight-foot section of the pipe.
The work Friday caused the town to close Main Street from South Street to Chestnut Street. The town released an alert earlier in the day, stating the work would be done around 12 p.m. but the work took longer than expected.
As of 3 p.m. Friday, Thompson said town crews were finishing up with traffic expected to return to normal on Main Street later Friday afternoon.
