The 5th annual Grinch Gallop will be Saturday, Dec. 14 at Smyrna High School.

The event is a fundraiser to benefit individuals suffering from cancer in the Smyrna/Clayton communities.

Profits from this year's fundraiser will be split between the Lori Robinson Scholarship and two Smyrna/Clayton honorees currently battling life threatening illnesses. This year's honorees are Olga Lopez – wife of custodian Miguel Lopez – who suffers from stomach cancer, and Barb Reed, a community member with mesothelioma.

Registration the day of the event is 8 to 8:50 a.m. at the SHS football stadium. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. The 1-Mile Holiday Walk begins at 9:10 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the races. The awards are custom-made trophies awarded to the top male/female in the following categories for the 5K run: ages 10 and below, ages 11 to 14, ages 15 to 19, ages 20 to 29, ages 30 to 39, ages 40 to 49, and ages 50 plus. Trophies will also go to the top male/female in the 1-Mile Walk.

New this year is an award for the Best Group Costume. The group must include two or more runners/walkers. The winner will receive a $150 gift card.

Registration prior to Dec. 6 is for a discounted price of $20. Registration after Dec. 6 or on race day is $25.

Sponsors are needed for the fundraiser. Companies and/or Local Heroes wishing to sponsor with a $200 minimum donation, received prior to Nov. 18, will be thanked on the back of the race shirt.
