A fire south of Smyrna in the early morning hours of Tuesday has been ruled arson by the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office.

The fire was reported at 1:54 a.m. by a neighbor in the 300 block of Willowwod Drive in the Willowwood development, according to a press release sent out by Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal B. Scott Bullock.

Citizens' Hose Company arrived to find heavy fire and smoke involving the two-story dwelling. The home's occupants safely exited the home prior to the fire department's arrival.

Cheswold and Leipsic fire companies assisted. The fire was placed under control at 2:41 a.m.

Deputy state fire marshals responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set, Bullock said. Fire marshals are withholding the origin of the fire to protect the investigation. Damages are estimated at $200,000.

The home was equipped with working smoke detectors.
