Clayton firefighters and police officers will face off against their Dover counterparts on Saturday, Dec. 7 in a flag football game that will not only be entertaining but played for a good cause as well.

The 6th annual Clayton Fire Company Toys for Tots Flag Football game will be played at 10 a.m. at Smyrna High School. Gates open at 9 a.m.

The annual game was started in 2008 when the Clayton Police Department asked the Clayton Fire Department to participate in the game. Fire company member Skip Carrow said initially the game was played between Clayton Police and the Citizens' Hose Company in Smyrna. Then the battle of the gridiron evolved to a matchup between Clayton police and Clayton firefighters that would benefit the U.S. Marines' Toys for Tots Program.

Admission to the game will be one unwrapped toy for a girl or boy up to the age of 12 years old or a cash donation. Money donated will go towards the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

One change to this year's game is the time; the department decided to play the game in the morning versus the afternoon.

"We're hoping people will get up, come to the game and then enjoy the rest of the day," said Fire Company Public Information Officer Kevin Wilson. "We always get a lot of people stopping by to donate toys. We typically end up with five, six, or seven boxes full of toys. So it's successful in terms of the amount of toys we get. We're hoping to get more folks to stay for the game."

Out of the six years the game has been played, the local team has won. Past year's games have been played against Hartly Fire Company and Harrington Fire Company. Last year Clayton defeated Dover by a lopsided score of 69-22.

The Smyrna High School band will perform at halftime; refreshments will be available at the game.

"This is a fun event for the community," Wilson said. "The Dover and Clayton fire departments and police officers have come together to support two good causes."

If you are not able to make the game, but would like to donate a toy or cash, please contact Skip Carrow, of the Clayton Fire Company, at (302) 632-2405 for drop-off details.

Carrow and Wilson would like to thank the follow game sponsors: Smyrna School District, Procter & Gamble, RWM Embroidery, Smyrna Health & Nutrition; Hudson, Jones, Jaywork & Fisher Law Firm; and the National Fall Firefighters Foundation.
