The new signal at the intersection of Carter Road and Sunnyside Road in Smyrna will be activated in early December, according to a press release sent by DelDOT Friday.

The signal will be activated Monday, Dec. 2 after the morning rush as a flashing yellow light and then converted on Friday, Dec. 6 to full "red-yellow-green" stop-and-go operation.

Message boards have been placed near the intersection to advise drivers of the new traffic pattern.

The traffic light was installed at the intersection as part of DelDOT's Carter Road project, which is nearing completion. The $4 million project includes new 11-foot lanes, five-foot shoulders on each side, curbs and sidewalks, a drainage system to deal with stormwater, relocation of utility poles, and streetlights.

The purpose of the project is to make the road wider and safer for cars, bicyclists, walkers, and joggers. The contractor for the improvements is A-Del Construction Company, of Newark. The project is expected to be complete in late November or early December.
