Raymond Jones scored four touchdowns in the first half to lead Hodgson Vo-Tech to a 38-0 victory over St. Georges in the DIAA Division Two state football championship game played Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium in Newark. "I said it earlier, defense wins championships, said Hodgson coach Frank Moffett. "And our defense all year, has been locked, and we were locked today against a very good football team… what a great game we played today both offensively and defensively, it was an awesome game."
Hodgson scored on its first possession as Jones raced for the first touchdown of the day. After a penalty, the Silver Eagles made a two point conversion to build an 8-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, Jones scored again, to build their advantage to 14-0.
In the second quarter, St. George's usually quick offense was unable to sustain any drives, keeping the Hawk defense on the field.
Jones then scored his third touchdown, but the 2-point conversion was no good. Near the end of second quarter, Jones scored his fourth touchdown, but again the PAT was no good, making the score 26-0 heading into halftime.
St. Georges got the ball to starts the third quarter, but the Silver Eagles defense again shut the door when
Hodgson's Daniel Parker intercepted a Zach Wright pass and the Silver Eagles took over at their18-yard line.
At the 6:40 mark, Rakeem Woodland scored on a 39-yard touchdown run. The 2 point conversion was no good.leaving the score at 32-0.The Hodgson drive covered 82-yard drive.
St Georges was again stopped on downs at midfield due to an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Hodgson would essentially clinch the game and the victory when Carr scored at 1:47 of the third period to build the lead to 38-0.
St. Georges' speedy tandem of Taronn and Keyjaun Selby were shut down throughout the game and Wright did not have much time to throw against the Silver Eagle defense.
