The Smyrna Eagles wrestling team came away with a hard-fought and very exciting 32-24 home victory over an equally talented squad from Cape Henlopen Friday night. The Eagles are 5-1 in dual meets, but remain undefeated against in-state opponents.
The match opened Smyrna's Kalen Wilson defeating Nick Diego 11-7 in the 145-pound division, giving the Eagles a quick 3-0 lead. But the Vikings would come storming back to win six straight matches, capped off by senior Tom Ott pinning Jerren Carter at 1:01 of the bout. Ott is the defending state champion at 220 pounds.
At that point it looked bleak for a Smyrna victory, but the Eagles had hope when Terren Carter won a 5-3 decision over Nicholas Carroll in the heavyweight bout (285). The crowd really got into the match when freshman Chase Archangelo earned a 9-0 major decision over Emerson Fajardo.
Smyrna would then go on to win the next five bouts, including senior Brent Fleetwood's Tech decision over Dante Jacquet at 126 pounds, and senior Tyler Carney's 7-2 decision over Elliot Young to wrap up the close match and the Smyrna victory.
After the exciting match against Cape, the Eagles participated in the Escape the Rock weekend tournament at Council Rock South in Pa. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Vikings lost their first dual match of the year, and now have a 4-1 record. Cape Henlopen wrestled against D-2 state champion St. Georges on Saturday.
