  • State of Delaware offices will be closed today after the winter storm that ended this morning, according to a press release from Gov. Jack Markell.
Non-essential employees should not to report to work for the 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. time period.
Essential employees are to report as scheduled.
The level 1 driving warning is still in effect this morning, Markell said.
"We are continually monitoring the road conditions in order to lift the State of Emergency as soon as it is safe to do so," he said.
DelDOT Community Relations Officer Jim Westoff said DelDOT crews were on the job last night and early this morning plowing and salting roads to make them safe.
Their efforts are being hindered, however, by temperatures in the single digits and strong winds, he said. Temperature below 10 degrees make salt less effective at melting ice and snow. High winds cause snow to drift back over areas already plowed.
Roads will be icy in spots and secondary and suburban streets will be snow covered in locations, said Westoff. Bridges, ramps and other elevated surfaces may be slippery.
As the day progresses and daylight returns, DelOT will be in a better position to assess the road network and advise state officials on appropriate driving precautions.
Markell said hundreds of employees with over 300 pieces of equipment have been working steadily to clear roadways enough for safe passage. With snow ending earlier this morning, crews have begun work on the secondary roads.
"If you do not need to be out on the roads this morning, please don't drive," said Markell. "This gives DelDOT the space it needs to get its work done and will help keep you safe."
