An inmate at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna died Thursday following an illness.
Michael E. Raiford, 63, died in the Correctional Center at 11:12 a.m., according to John Painter from the Department of Correction Office of Media Relations.
Raiford, who did not have a known address, was serving a 64-year sentence for two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, first-degree robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, two counts of attempting to commit a crime, and attempting to commit a felony "A" crime.
His sentence effective date was Sept. 28, 1993.
Raiford's body has been turned over to the State Medical Examiner's Office, as is standard procedure.
Foul play is not suspected, Painter said.
