Smyrna High School won its second consecutive Division-One team wrestling title with an exciting 43-17 victory over archrival Caesar Rodney on Tuesday night. The Eagles are coached by Kurt Howell, and the Riders are coached by his brother, Dickie Howell. "It's great for the team, and it's great to have family bragging rights, at least until the next big tournament come up," said Kurt Howell.
The Eagles won six of their first seven matches and built up a strong 26-5 lead over their arch-rivals. After the Riders won three in a row in the heavy weight divisions, The Eagles put the match away with their experienced, lighter wrestlers. The match was capped off by Brent Fleetwood's forfeit victory.
"This was a great team victory. We all worked hard to achieve the title," said Fleetwood. Teammate Tyler Carney echoed the sentiments. "This was a championship we all worked hard for since the beginning of the season. We didn't want to let anyone down, so we kept working hard until it was finished," he said.
Smyrna advanced to the finals after defeating Salesianum.
