  • For the second year in a row, the Smyrna High School boys tennis team has won the Bunny Vosters Team Sportsmanship Award presented by USTA Middle States Delaware.
The award is presented to the one team in Delaware that epitomizes sportsmanship and character during the season.
The tennis team received the 2013 Bunny Vosters Team Sportsmanship Award Feb. 9 at an awards ceremony for the USTA Delaware District held at the Doubletree Hotel in Wilmington.
Senior Josh Allison said he’s proud of the team for receiving the award.
“We’ve worked hard out on the court and kept our manners up,” said Allison. “I think the team is well deserving of the award.”
Last year’s boys tennis coach Debra Morrison said she is very proud of the team because no matter what the match score was, the players always showed respect for themselves and the other players. The boys tennis team went 0-14 in 2013 and 3-12 in 2012.
“The players on the team always wanted to have fun. They would balance competition with being nice people, which speaks very highly of their character,” Morrison said. “I hope the players take with them that sportsmanship happens everywhere in your life. Even when you’re disappointed, doesn’t mean you have to put other people down to make yourself feel good.”
Allison thinks the awards show that the coaches and parents have played a hand in teaching good sportsmanship.
“I think it shows that no matter the outcome, we keep respect for the game as well as the other players,” he said. “With it being two years in a row, the coaches and parents have been doing something right to make sure their sons keep good sportsmanship on the court."
