  • Smyrna Town Council honored Smyrna Elementary student Lawrence Tyrell at the town council meeting Monday night.
Tyrell recently saved the life of a fellow student and friend by performing the Heimlich maneuver on the boy while at lunch.
Mayor Joanne Masten said she read an article about Tyrell's heroic actions in the paper and after speaking with his mother, realized she had seen him at a council meeting a few years ago when his sister was honored for saving Tyrell's life by doing the Heimlich maneuver.
Masten read aloud a certificate of appreciation at the meeting Monday.
"We are pleased to recognize Lawrence for his bravery and composure as he saved a fellow classmate," Masten said. "He is a hero and is a wonderful example of a helpful, considerate and true friend. We're very proud of you."
