After the first day of competition, the Smyrna girls are in a good position to repeat as conference track champions.

It’s a battle-royal for supremacy in the 2014 Henlopen Conference Track & Field Championships being held at Dover High School on Thursday and Friday. The athletes were fortunate to have perhaps the nicest weather of the spring to compete as the afternoon was sunny and warm.

In the Girls Division, defending champion Smyrna has already grabbed some points in the 4 X 800 relay, finishing in second place.

The Lady Eagles will again battle Caesar Rodney and a strong Sussex Tech for the Conference crown.

Most of the action on Thursday dealt with preliminary races, with a number of finals to be held on Friday.

In the boys division, Caesar Rodney is going for its second consecutive championship.

But watch out for Dover, which defeated the Riders last week by a single point.

Both Divisions should come down to the wire, as each athlete will attempt to run, jump or throw their personal bests, to help their team win the 2014 Henlopen Conference Track & Field crown.

Tickets are $5 for the meet. The DIAA State Championships will be held May 16-17 at Caesar Rodney High School.
