  • The 59th Annual Blue-Gold All-Star football game is right around the corner.  The game will be played at Delaware Stadium in Newark on Saturday June 21. The opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. and kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
This year, Smyrna High School will send one player to the game on the Gold team; he’s offensive lineman Jose Ortiz, who was a co-captain of the Eagles squad this past fall. Last year, he was named to the first-team All-State team, one of three Smyrna linemen to be honored. It was the first time Smyrna had three offensive linemen on the All-State roster.
Three Eagle cheerleaders were also selected to represent the Gold team; they are Casey Polasko, Linda Staats and Taylor Daniels. Finally, Kayla Kennedy and Brenna Wharton will represent their school as Senior Ambassadors.
All of the players are seniors, and they were selected by their coaches and the Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association.
Laurel head coach Glenn Phillips Jr. will lead the Gold. His assistants include Joey Deiter from Laurel, Eston Ennis, from Woodbridge, Mark Quillen, from Sussex Tech, and Mike Tkach, from Milford.
DFRC will also celebrate the participants from 1964 and 1989 to mark the 50th and 25th anniversaries of their participation. Participants include football players, cheerleaders, band members, queen candidates, coaches, officials, and other Game Day volunteers. Both reunion groups will be acknowledged on the field prior to kick-off on Game Day. This season will also be the 40th anniversary of the Hand-in-Hand Program and 50th anniversary of the DFRC Blue-Gold Marching Band.
Proceeds from the game are used to support programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities throughout Delaware.
