  • The Smyrna-Clayton Big League batters are often swinging for the fences in a baseball game, but this summer the team has a special goal in mind, working for their fourth straight district title. The Big League features ball players from ages 15-to-18, with a number of players swapping their Smyrna High School uniforms for their Big League uniforms.
Team manager Gordon Gelley said the team is playing well, and is off to a 3-1 start, which is not bad, but the weather and other factors have wreaked havoc on the schedule. “We’ve played three games on the field so far, with one forfeit, but the weather has caused problems with rain-outs and unplayable fields, as well as vacations and summer work schedules. “It’s been hard putting together a line-up, and some team have trouble getting enough players to a game,” he said.
Gelley said he’s proud the Smyrna-Clayton team has won the title the last three years, playing against teams from M-O-T (Middletown area), Dover, Camden-Wyoming, Felton/Harrington and Milford. The league playoffs will begin in July following the conclusion of the season.
The team has a game tonight (Monday) against Dover starting at 7 p.m. The field is directly across from Smyrna High School on Duck Creek Parkway.
