A Smyrna woman has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after police say she left her five-year-old in the car for 20 minutes.
On Aug. 27 at approximately 5:07 p.m. Smyrna Police officers responded to the Smyrna Mart Shopping Center in the area of the Acme for a report of a child left inside a motor vehicle. Police said upon arrival officers contacted several witnesses who advised the child was inside the car for approximately 20 minutes without any parent/guardian.
Officers were forced to make entry to the motor vehicle and ensure the wellbeing of the five-year-old, who was also determined to be autistic, police said. While officers were on the scene, they contacted the mother of the child, Inga Gillett-Spio, 37 of the 500 block of Sequoia Drive in Smyrna.
Police said Gillett-Spio was arrested for one count of endangering the welfare of a child and arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court 2 via videophone and subsequently released on $1,000 unsecured bail.
Police said officers contacted the Delaware Division of Family Services regarding the investigation.
