ORIGINAL STORY ABOUT GLEE CLUB:

On Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m., the Smyrna Opera House will hold an introductory Glee Club meeting for young adults 15-19 years of age.

This will be the first ever Smyrna Opera House Glee Club, and the group will be under the musical direction of Irv Rothenberg, who is the head of music at Sunnyside Elementary.

“We are hoping to offer young adults a chance to shine by presenting a variety of light musical numbers, augmented with appropriate staging and choreography,” said Rothenberg. “The musicality will be enhanced by the movement, which will be added to the songs. Call it ‘Glee,’ call it ‘Show Choir,’ but in the end it is just good old musical fun.”

Future rehearsals will take place on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m., all at the Opera House. Please note that other rehearsals may be necessary as the final performance approaches.

David Keller, the Opera House Executive Director, said, “We’re hoping to jump on the popularity of the new hit show ‘Glee,’ and provide a forum for young adults from the area to showcase their vocal talent. It also fits well into our mission to offer cultural activities for the community to become active participants. In this case, the ‘community’ happens to be high school and college aged students.”

The performance by the Glee Club will be on Saturday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.

“I look forward to seeing the performers’ progress throughout the rehearsal process, and of course, seeing the final performance,” said Keller. “Should be a great time for all involved – including the audience!”

Those participating in the meeting will be singing the Smyrna Opera House Glee Club theme song, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, first made famous by the popular rock/pop group Journey in the 1980s.

Glee Club participants must be between the ages of 15-19.
