Smyrna took care of business against Wilmington Charter in the first round of the state softball tournament on Saturday.
The No. 3 seeded Eagles (16-3) blanked No. 14 seed Charter in a 4-0 shut out on May 29 at Smyrna’s Jo Carter Field.
“Last year we lost in the first round, so we’re happy to get past the first one,” said Smyrna pitcher Chelsea Botsch, who threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts. She also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and a home run.
In the first inning, senior Kayla Carrow drove in Botsch with a hit to right field for the first run of the game.
The Eagles added three more runs in the second inning. Olivia Everett’s hit scored teammate Jordan Whitley.
Smyrna finished the game with five hits and two errors.
After the game, Botsch said the Eagles are all focused on the same goal.
“We want to get as far as possible, and hopefully win it this year.”
Next up, the Smyrna High softball team will host another home game in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday, June 1.
The Eagles will face the winner of No. 6 Archmere (17-1) and No. 11 Hodgson (15-3).
