Turn on your porch lights to show your commitment to safe streets and neighborhoods from 6 – 8:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 31 during Smyrna’s sixth annual National Night Out and then join the fun in downtown Smyrna for games, prizes, music, exhibits, demonstrations, food and more!
National Night Out is a unique community event, celebrated in the United States and Canada that focuses on prevention of crime and drug activity, is designed to: heighten community awareness of crime and drug prevention; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The celebration will be held on South Main Street between Commerce and South Streets, hosted by the Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association and the Smyrna Police Department under sponsorships from WSFS and the Wal-Mart Foundation, has grown into Smyrna’s largest block party and is a great way to celebrate the end of Summer.
The Delaware National Guard will staff an informational booth for drug/alcohol awareness as well as bring their rock climbing wall as a new feature this year.
Downtown businesses including Holly Mayer Designs, PNC Bank, Bailee’s 21, Candy Time Sweet Shop will be participating this year.
You won’t want to miss Main Street Market’s dessert sampling from 6-7 p.m. at 140 South Main Street.
Loving Care Nursery School will provide face painting.
Christiana Care and Bayhealth Medical Centers will be returning again this year along with Abundant Life Chiropractic Center and the Smyrna High School Wellness Center.
Cultural and historical organizations including The Smyrna Library Guild, The Biggs Museum of Art and Duck Creek Historical Society also will be participating.
There will be emergency vehicles on display from the Smyrna Police Department, the Clayton Police Department, Citizens' Hose Company No. 1, in addition to the Clayton and Townsend fire departments and other law enforcement and emergency responders.
As in year’s past there will be free giveaways for children and an opportunity to meet emergency responders and to see the equipment they use in their work.
Also on display will be vintage antique police cruisers.
The Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association will offer a variety of free games with prizes for children.
Among the performances the perennially popular the Flying Dragons Tae Kwan Do with a martial arts presentation.
DJ Rockin’ Rodney will be returning as well, providing music for the evening.
