Smyrna High's Brent Fleetwood won first place in the 106-pound weight class to help lead the Eagles to a 10th-place finish at the Escape the Rock Tournament in Pennsylvania Jan. 13 and 14.
The 32-team event featured most of the top teams in eastern Pennsylvania (including Bethlehem Catholic which is ranked in the top five in the country, and several top out of state teams such as New Jersey state champion Paulsboro and Colonial Forge, a top Virginia program.
On his way to the title at 106 pounds, Fleetwood defeated Ethan Lisjack in the finals 7-1. Lisjack was second in his weight class in Pennsylvania last year and is the top ranked wrestler in his weight in Pennsylvania this year.
Smyrna High's Zach Boyles placed third at 160 pounds. His only loss was to Bryan Brill of Central Mountain who was ranked second in the country. Boyles won by technical fall over everyone else.
At 113 pounds, Smyrna's Tyler Carney placed sixth. He defeated an opponent who placed eighth in last year's Pennsylvania state tournament. Carney's two losses were both in overtime.
John Archangelo finished sixth for the Eagles at 120 pounds.
Next Smyrna High wrestling match: Friday, Jan. 20 at home vs. Cape Henlopen. Junior varsity at 6:30 p.m., followed by varsity.
