Smyrna Middle School FFA students excel at State Fair

The team of Sarah McHale (left)and Gabrielle Virdin from Smyrna Middle School won 1st place in the Zoology event at the FFA Agriscience Fair during the Delaware State Fair in Harrington. They were among many award winners from the middle school which was also named the top chapter in Delaware by the National Association of Agricultural Educators.

Smyrna Middle School FFA, which was named the 2009-2010 Delaware Chapter of the Year, celebrated at the State Fair July 30 after winning a variety of awards, presented at the Delaware FFA Awards Breakfast.

“Many of their exhibits earned honors in the agriscience fair, and we congratulate them on their hard work,” said teacher and FFA advisor Holly Hufford. “We are quite proud of our students and we thank them for their dedication to our chapter, and we thank our FFA parents for all of their support.”

Here are the results for Smyrna Middle School:

AGRISCIENCE FAIR
Individual Botany: Heather Tolliver, 1st place
Individual Biotechnology & Food Science: Rachel Dillmore, 2nd place

Team Zoology:
Gabrielle Virdin & Sarah McHale: 1st place
Kaitlyn Garrison & Madison Lewis: 2nd place
Leandra Gantzer & Shannon O’Malley: 4th place

Team Biotechnology & Food Science: Jennifer Savin & Taylor Dixon, 1st place

Individual Environmental: David (DJ) Correll, 2nd place

Smyrna Middle School FFA members submitted seven Agriscience Fair projects, winning a total of $565. Each science fair project competed for the opportunity to attend the National Convention. These five students, in particular, will represent Smyrna Middle School at the National Convention: Jennifer Savin, Taylor Dixon, Gabrielle Virdin, Sarah McHale & Heather Tolliver.

DAIRY SHOWMANSHIP
Brendan Cook, 3rd place. He will represent the Smyrna Middle School at The Eastern States Exposition, in Springfield, Massachusetts, in September.

HORSE JUDGING TEAM
Madison Lewis, Kaitlyn Garrison, Gabrielle Jones & Heather Tolliver, 6th place in the high school division.

AGRONOMY JUDGING MEMBERS
Shannon O’Malley & Austin Mayer, 2nd place in the middle school division

MEMBERS WHO COMPLETED VOLUNTEER WORK

SPECIAL VISIT -- On Friday, July 23, two of our Middle School Students got the distinct honor of meeting the National Secretary of Education Dr. Arne Duncan from Washington, D.C. Secretary Duncan specifically traveled to our Delaware State Fair to meet with 4-H and FFA members in our state. Chapter President Gabreille Virdin and Chapter Vice-President Sarah McHale spoke with Secretary Duncan about their state winning science fair project and future plans.
