State auditor R. Thomas Wagner Jr. has confirmed his office has found a number of irregularities during its investigation into the town of Kenton’s finances. The official report on the investigation is not yet completed, however, and no arrests have been made. Additionally, Wagner said a definitive dollar figure on the losses is pending final documentation from a credit card company. Wagner said the problems apparently took place during the term of former town treasurer Stephanie Mickle.
When Richard Baldwin first joined the Smyrna Police as a patrolman in 1984, the department employed seven police officers. Smyrna’s police force, like the town it serves, has grown by leaps and bounds since then. Baldwin, who has served as police chief for the past 13 years, now leads a department of 23 officers and seven civilian employees. He’s also seen Smyrna grow from a town of about 4,000 residents in 1984 to one that has now surpassed the 10,000 mark. But soon it will be someone else’s turn to lead the Smyrna Police. The 62-year-old Baldwin, who lives in Odessa, will retire on Sept. 6.

It’s been a long and winding road for Ovations, a 200-lot housing development planned off of Clayton-Greenspring Road in Clayton. The development was approved back in 2005 as a 55 and older community, but the developer, Ashburn Homes, now wants to build Ovations without an age restriction and has submitted a fresh subdivision plan to the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission in order to do so.
A Smyrna company recently won two awards for its new product at Invent Help’s INPEX International Trade Show, but they’re using local suppliers, manufacturers, and retailers to build what company leaders hope will become a global success. The product is FACEMATE, a silicon rubber “frame” that fits on a computer monitor to hold notes, photos, and business cards. It can even hold an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper while you type.

At the age of 14, Taylor Dixon can already call herself a world champion horse rider. The soon-to-be freshman at Smyrna High won two first place titles at the Pinto World Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma in early June, in the English Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle categories in the youth senior division for ages 14 to 18. Later that month, she won first place in Hunter Under Saddle at the Paint World Show at Fort Worth, Texas, also in the youth senior division.
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Anne McCue from Australia will perform at the next Cooldog House Concerts show near Kenton on Saturday, Aug. 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. The opening act will be Larissa Moore.
Joe Analore, the owner of the new Smyrna Power Equipment and Repair, worked for many years mowing, landscaping, and installing irrigation systems, and his experiences inspired him to open a business to help contractors as well as homeowners with yard maintenance machines.
Local residents have a new option for tires and auto service and repair – Smyrna Tire & Auto on Rt. 13 south of Smyrna. The business, which opened in January, sells new and used tires and offers a variety of automotive services, including tune ups and oil changes.

Smyrna High School teachers Kellie Michaud Sarah Bell were among the first four agriculture teachers in the nation to be selected by NASA and the National Science Teachers Association for the zero-gravity program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
