Sunnyside Farm residential development gets nod from Smyrna Council

By Kelly Rouke

Although Smyrna Town Council recently approved subdivision plans for the Sunnyside Farm residential development, construction will not begin until after the water and sewer contracts have been awarded.

The proposed 596 unit subdivision, which is located at the end of Carter Road on the Mitchell Farm, was approved during the July 2 town council meeting. Development plans involve a 113 acre portion of the property known as the Mitchell Farm.

L. Vincent Ramunno, a Wilmington attorney, is part owner of Liborio, Ltd., the company which purchased the entire residential portion of Mitchell Farm in Sept. 1988 from Gulfshore Corp. for a reported $625,000. Ramunno is one of three partners in Lenape Associates Builders Inc. Lenape is responsible for the construction of the development which will include single-family homes, semidetached units, townhouses and apartments in the residential section....

Besides the 596 residential units, the development will also include a six acre park.

What’s in a name? Ask Smyrna Council

By John Flood

What’s in a name? Well, possibly an inconvenient address change and confusion. How would you like to take a turn off Rt. 13 onto Welfare Home Road where you though Sunnyside Road had always been?

Smyrna Town Council will send a letter to the Kent County Levy Court suggesting that Sunnyside Road remain Sunnyside Road and that Rt. 13 remain duPont Boulevard.

Councilman James Mood brought up the issue of these road names before council Monday night with the news that a short piece of Sunnyside Road was planned to be named Welfare Home Road by the county. The county is making sure all roads have names for the 911 system.

The county was working from old maps which referred to a section of the road by Welfare Home Road. Council agreed it would be much simpler and preferable to name the entire road Sunnyside Road.

Council also wants Rt. 13 through Smyrna to remain duPont Boulevard instead of duPont Highway. The county, said Mood, is numbering the entire length of Rt. 13 within the county using Division St. in Dover as the dividing street between north and south.

Consequently all Smyrna addresses on Rt. 13 would become north duPont Highway addresses with numbers in between 3,000 and 5,000.

In the interest of saving Smyrna businesses the trouble of changing their names, council will suggest that the county retain the duPont Boulevard address in Smyrna with Commerce St. as the dividing street between north and south, just as it is now....
