O’Neill to head School Board; $512,945 budget approved

The Board of Education of the Smyrna Special School District at their reorganization meeting unanimously reelected Mrs. Margaret M. O’Neill as president. Mrs. O’Neill will begin in 1960-61 her fifth year as president of the board.

W. Howard Nowland was elected vice president.

Mrs. O’Neill, who first served on the board in 1954, is active in numerous community and civic affairs, as well as being treasurer of the Delaware School Boards Association. Mr. Nowland has served for the past four years as chairman of the building commission. He was first elected to the board in 1956 and returned in 1960 in an uncontested election.

Dr. George V. Kirk, superintendent, will continue to serve as secretary.

The Smyrna board noted that three vacancies still existed for teachers, one in Grade 4, one in junior high studies-English, and one in junior high mathematics.

The board, in formal action, approved the budget of local and state funds submitted to them, with several minor revisions. This budget envisions the expenditure of $512,945 from state funds, and $72, 623.25 from local funds. Of the local fund expenditures $26,923 represents debit service costs in the payment of bonds and interest on buildings constructed in the Smyrna District.
