Legislature votes to reallocate funds to solve deficit

Representative Heal’s bill, passed by the House several days ago, to authorize the state to borrow $600,000 from the highway fund and $400,000 from the school fund to bolster up the general fund was passed by the unanimous vote of the Senate Monday afternoon.

As this loan was recommended by the Governor in his message to the Legislature, executive approval of the measure is anticipated. Under this plan the state will be authorized to issue certificates of indebtedness to the departments from which the money will be taken.

The State Board of Education also will be authorized to issue bonds up to the amount borrowed. The State Highway Department already has authority to issue bonds.

Homer Hoffecker acquitted of murder charge

The jury in the murder case of William H. Hoffecker Jr., charged with murder in the first degree in killing Charles E. Brown at the home of Roy Cahall in Kenton on last December 31, returned a verdict of not guilty Tuesday night.

The case which was tried before the Court of Oyer and Terminer of the February term of Court, meeting this week in Kent County at Dover, had elicited much interst in this vicinity because of the prominence of the young man’s family in Kenton Hundred – the case of a wayward boy, raised amid good home influence, falling into bad habits and becoming involved in a drunken brawl.

Hoffecker was charged with having shot Brown at the home of Roy Cahall at Kenton. Mrs. Chall testified that Hoffecker shot Brown in her home while he was sitting in a chair, but the defense contended that Brown was shot during a tussle between Brown, Mrs. Cahall and Hoffecker for possession of a gun.

The jury, after weighing the evidence, felt it was an accidental case and voted for acquittal.

Proposal would allow Welfare Home residents to vote

No resident of the State Welfare Home at Smyrna could be considered a pauper, but would be classed as guest of the state under the provisions of a bill introduced in the House Thursday afternoon by Representative Dugan.

This measure would give residents of the home the right of franchise and would entitle them to vote at any city, county, state or national election.
