Planning and Zoning approves plans for 80 townhouses

Smyrna’s Planning and Zoning Commission will recommend that town council approve a proposed subdivision to be located off East Commerce Street.

The commission decided to support subdivision approval for 80 townhouses between East Commerce Street and East Frazier Street, running parallel with Locust Street....

Blackbird man makes Middle East cargo flight

Air Force Reserve Major Frederick Stites, of Gumbush Road in Blackbird, has just returned from a flight to the Middle East.

Stites, who has been in the reserves for 17 years, volunteered to take maintenance personnel and support equipment to fighter units that have been sent to the area after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

Flying out of McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, Stites said his crew flew to Torrejon Airbase near Madrid, where they remained for about a day. They then moved on to Oman on the Arabian Seas, and went on to take supplies to areas in the Persian Gulf....

Enrollment in district is up for 1990-91

The 1990-91 school year is just around the corner and Smyrna School District Superintendent Dr. Wayne Barton is keeping track of enrollment figures for the coming year.

“Enrollment figures for the Smyrna School District have been fluctuating since mid-May. However, on Thursday, August 16, the recorded count for the six district schools was up to 2,967 students,” said Dr. Barton.

On September 30 of last year, the official enrollment count was at a high of 2,919 students, so the August 1990 count already points to a jump in total student enrollment of nearly 50 students.

Enrollment for each school in the district for the 1989-1990 school year was as follows:
Smyrna Kindergarten Center, 251; Clayton Elementary School, 254; North Smyrna Elementary, 326; Smyrna Elementary, 407; Smyrna Middle School, 714; and Smyrna High School, 967....

Zolper named top police recruit

Delaware state trooper C. William Zolper III, of Smyrna, was recently named the outstanding recruit trooper by the Delaware State Police. He received the governor’s plaque for outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, sportsmanship, and overall excellence....

Zolper, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. William Zolper of Smyrna, is a 1982 graduate of Smyrna High School....

Kim Robinson places in national teen pageant

Kimberly M. Robinson, Miss Delaware U.S. Teen, competed in the National Miss U.S. Teen Pageant during the week of July 31 to Aug. 5 in Atlanta, Georgia.

She was selected first runner-up of the nation in the talent competition. She performed one of Swanhilda’s variations from the ballet, “Coppelia.” Her prizes included a $1,000 college scholarship, flowers, pageant gown, garment bag, pageant shoes, and a jeweled crown pin.

She is a June 1990 graduate of Caravel Academy and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan F. Robinson Jr. of Smyrna.

Holleger wins 4-H safety contest

Shannon Holleger, the daughter of Brian and Sheila Holleger of Smyrna, won the 4-H state safety demonstration contest at the Delaware State Fair on July 26. Her presentation was entitled “Safety Sense.”...
