Townsend youth dies in accident near Kenton
An 18 year-old Townsend youth was thrown 66 feet to his death last Saturday night when his car ran out of control near Kenton. A pursuing trooper plucked a companion from the wrecked vehicle as it was enveloped in flames.
Police said the dead youth, Thomas De Shong, apparently dozed off. Police said De Shong and John E.Voshell, 18, of Dover, were on their way home from the Picadelly Palace, a dance hall near the Delaware-Maryland state line.
Voshell was unconscious when pulled from the car. He was admitted at Kent General Hospital with cuts of the head and body.
De Shong was dead on arrival at Dover Air Force Base Hospital….
Clayton School to open Sept. 7
Coleman Metzler, principal of the Clayton School, has announced that the school has been thoroughly cleaned, new acoustical tile installed in ceiling of all hallways, except the primary wing; the interior and exterior painted, and the furnace re-bricked.
School will open on Wednesday, September 7, with a half-session starting on Thursday, September 8.
All faculty positions are filled, and two now faculty members appointed.
Albert G. Springer, is the new teacher of junior high general science and half of the seventh grade geography and physical education classes. He replaces Thomas Baumgardner, resigned. He has taught six years in Sudlersville, Md., and has a B.S. degree and M. A. degree in agriculture from West Virgina University. He is married and has three children.
Berry D. Meeks replaces Mrs. Reba Mears on the faculty. He will teach junior high English, social studies, and art. This will be his first year of teaching, and he is working on his bachelor’s degree at McNeese State College, Lake Charles, Louisiana.
James Ryan cops top Fishing Rodeo honors
The first local Junior Fishing Rodeo, staged Saturday at Lake Como, Smyrna, was a great success, with 26 boys and five girls from the Smyrna-Clayton area participating, and a total catch of 65 fish.
Of the 31 contestants James Ryan, of Smyrna Ave., Clayton, was declared the winning boy, with a four-ounce bluegill, and Barbara Cooper, Smyrna, winner among the girls with a two and one-half once ring perch. The winners received a fishing rod and reel and other prizes. They will also be honored guests at Dover Tuesday night at the Delaware Junior Fishing Rodeo Association’s banquet.
