Bill provides for 40-hour week for postal work
A House bill in Congress to provide a 40-hour week in the postal service was passed Monday by the Senate. The bill, which now goes back to the House for action on Senate amendments, would cost an estimated $22,000,000 a year and give permanent work to 10,000 substitute postal employees.
Local folks at Kent-Sussex Fair opening
A number from Smyrna-Clayton and vicinity motored to Harrington Tuesday for the opening of the big Kent-Sussex Fair. As usual, the first day was observed as Children’s Day when all children under 16 years of age are admitted free.
Amusements and attractions aplenty were offering inducements, while refreshment stands and other concessions were in full operation. The exhibits this year in agricultural products and art, a number being entered from this vicinity, were viewed by the crowd.
The harness racing is the center of attraction each afternoon.
Married men defeat single men
In a lively baseball contest Tuesday evening between the married men and the single men of Smyrna on the High School diamond, the married men ran away with the score 9 to 2. Bob Boyd managed the single men’s team but was unable to get an aggregation to make a close and exciting game.
No services at St. Peter’s Church
In the absence of the Rector who is on vacation, there will be no church services or church school held in St. Peter’s Church during the month of August.
Clayton Baseball Club splits weekend bill
On Saturday at Milford, the Clayton Baseball Club dropped a 13-inning hard-fought battle, 5 to 4. Sevil, on the mound for Clayton, pitched brilliant ball for 12 innings. He was relieved by Cochrane in the 13th. Cochrane allowed the first three men to face him to reach base then with bases loaded committed a balk, forcing in the winning run. Messimer led the hitting for Clayton while Slater was best for the winners.
On Sunday, Kennedyville was no match for the Clayton lads, Clayton winning 16 to 0. Cochrane on the mound for Clayton, pitched a steady game, allowing only one runner to reach third. Hurley was the leading slugger for Clayton with two triples and a double, while Boland was best for the losers.
On Saturday, Clayton will play at Wyoming while on Sunday, Goldsboro will visit Clayton….
