Clayton Council still undecided on filling vacant seat

Clayton Council may be one member short until the next regular town election in May 1991. Council was deadlocked Monday on how to fill the council seat left vacant by the resignation of Steve Faulkner last May.
According to Town Attorney William Witham there is little possibility for council to end this stalemate as long as each member of council maintains his position....

Councilmen Walt Lamon and George Haley want to appoint Betty Turner to council. This motion was brought before council but was voted down in a tie vote with Mayor Jim Carson and Councilman William Carrow opposed to the motion.

Carson and Carrow want to hold a special election to decide who will fill the seat, but that motion also died in a tie vote with Lamon and Haley voting against it....

Smyrna, state police make drug arrests in raid

After a three month undercover operation, police moved in on Smyrna’s open air drug market last Friday night and by early Saturday had arrested 16 people on 72 charges.

The crackdown was a result of Operation MADD (multiple arrests of drug dealers) through the combined efforts of the Smyrna Police Department and Delaware State Police Special Investigations Unit.

At around 7:45 p.m. Friday night, July 6, approximately 40 officers from Smyrna and the state police swept through the McLane Gardens Housing Development on Monrovia Avenue in Smyrna.Warrants had been obtained in advance for virtually all the street level drug dealers working Monrovia Avenue, police said.

Officers arrested 10 out of the 13 dealers they had targeted, which included six juveniles....

14 and under softball team wins tourney

Smyrna-Clayton 14 and under girls attended the Steel Blue Softball Tournament in Sterling, Va. during the weekend of June 30. The girls made the most of it by winning the tournament with a 4-0 record.

Smyrna-Clayton dominated their opponents by outscoring them 60-13 while playing excellent defense. The team’s batting average was an outstanding .446....

Robinson chosen Ms. Delaware U.S. Teen

Kimberly M. Robinson, 18, of Smyrna, has been selected Miss Delaware U.S. Teen 1990. She will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to represent the state of Delaware in the National Miss U.S. Teen Pageant....

In addition to rehearsals and other festivities, Robinson will meet Governor Harris of Georgia and present him with a gift representing the state of Delaware....
