SHS Softball in State Semis
Smyrna High’s softball team put away Cape Henlopen and Delmar to earn a spot in today’s Delaware High School Softball Tournament semifinals.
Senior pitcher Stacy Conley went the distance in both games. Against Cape, she had 1 walk, 3 strikeouts and 2 hits.
Smyrna recorded 4 hits and 4 errors in their 5-0 win.
Kelly McGinnis had a triple and 1 RBI; Kim Coverdale, Judy Mitchell and Lisa Hoisington had 1 single each; Michelle Pennington had 1 RBI.
“We had great defensive plays from McGinnis and (Tiffany) Johnson, said Coach Jo Carter.
In a 14-3 win over Delmar Saturday, McGinnis led the way with 2 hits, including a grand slam and double. Coverdale had 2 hits, including a homerun, and also drove in 3 runs for Smyrna.
The Eagles upped their unblemished record to 17-0 and will face either Laurel or Concord today.

The outstanding athletes for 1988-89 at Smyrna High School were Stacy Conley and Shawn Cook....

Woman Charged in Shooting Incident
A 28-year-old woman was arrested My 23 after she allegedly took a sledgehammer to her ex-boyfriend’s sports car and afterwards shot the car, according to the Smyrna Police....
The woman was committed to the Women’s Correctional Institution in Claymont in lieu of $6,000 bond. She is charged with reckless endangering first degree, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, and felony criminal mischief.
Scouts Take Part in “Crossing Over” Ceremonies (photo caption)
Several boys took part in “crossing over” ceremonies from Webelos into Boy Scouts last week at the Smyrna/Clayton Moose Lodge. Some also earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award for a Cub Scout.
